Subject: your permission

Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2006

Dear Namit Arora

I am seeking your permission to use about 50 Photographs from India in one of my presentations about understanding culture in India. I am not sure how much should I be paying to use these in my one-time slide show. Only after I get a response from you, I will finalize the number -if any- of pictures to use.

I must congratulate you on the finest quality of work and aesthetics that are evident in your collection. People like you make us all Indians proud of our Indian origin ... I found your depiction of india closest to reality. [I] was in the Indian civil services till 1995.

Dear Sir,

Had the opportunity to browse your website and view some extremely good photographs of various places in India.

We are a small inbound tour operating agency based in Delhi. Planning to compile a brochure for a recently contacted agent - thought of using some of your photos. In view of the copyright clause would like to seek your permission to do so. Appreciate if you could consider and advise the minimum possible liability involved.

Subject: License to use image?

Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2006

Dear Shunya,

I am writing to inquire about reproducing one of the pictures from your website in my forthcoming book, titled "India By Design: Colonial History and Cultural Display." The picture I'm interested in is of the Maha Bodhi Society Vihara in Sanchi. It will be included in Chapter 5 of my book, which is an account of the excavation of Buddhist relics during the colonial period, and the repatriation of these relics to India by the V&A Museum in the post-Independence period. These relics are now housed in the Sanchi Vihara, hence my interest in your photograph.

My book is a scholarly work, being published by a not-for-profit academic press, the University of California Press in Berkeley, CA. It will have a modest print run of 3,000-5,000 copies, and I am negotiating for an Indian edition (to be published by OUP Delhi). Since I must bear the costs of reproductions and permissions personally, I would be grateful if you might waive the licensing fees in return for a complimentary copy of the book. I will, of course, credit the photo according to the proper protocols, and can pay for any reproduction costs involved.

Thanks in advance. Your photographs are quite wonderful,

Best, S

Subject: Kutch - a region full of varieties........

Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2006

Kutch district of Gujarat was once an island, and the cities of Lakhpat, Mandvi were rich ports. It is a region of vast geographical varieties, there are mountains, deserts and sea shores in one single district.

There are many virgin places, yet to be explored here : like the beaches of dhrabudi and nana layja in mandvi taluka, the hills of tapkeshwari near bhuj, the small jungle of rakhal near deshalpar, hills of vara near kodki, kalo dungar, dhinodhar.

Kutch is a place rich of fossils. One old man from Sodha community here has wandered through entire region and collected several fossils, and set a museum called KUTCH FOSSIL PARK in vithon village of nakhtrana taluka. The tourism here is not developed as it should have been.

The photographs of dholavira in kutch remind me of the song called THERE ROLLS THE DEEP by Alfred Lord Tennyson.

There rolls the deep where grew the tree.
O earth, what changes hast thou seen!
There where the long street roars, hath been
The stillness of the central sea.
The hills are shadows, and they flow
From form to form, and nothing stands;
They melt like mist, the solid lands,
Like clouds they shape themselves and go.
But in my spirit will I dwell,
And dream my dream, and hold it true;
For thoÍ my lips may breathe adieu,
I cannot think the thing farewell.

Shunya - I am active in the University of the Third Age (a charity) and am currently putting together a powerpoint slideshow about Herodotus/Greece/Persia to show to our History groups here in England.

I live in Leamington Spa six months of the year, and in Hyderabad Andhra Pradesh the other six months. I am a retired ICT Consultant (see holloways.org ) and spend my time in India making and maintaining websites for charities (see 1, 2 and 3 )

I would like to use three of the maps you have, plus the bust of Herodotus (with pillars in background). I have a Paypal account. My main retirement chore is maintaining and developing my websites timewitnesses.org and worldu3a.org

Subject: Use of photograph

Hello

I found a photo on your web site of a starving man seated on the ground and want to ask your permission to use it in a Bible Society letter.

Bible Society is a not for profit charity, a worldwide organisation, who fundraises to provide Bibles to needy people around the World. Currently we are fundraising for Bibles for Myanmar, India and the Sudan. We will be writing a letter to our supporters tell them of the needs in these three countries and showing them a photo of people from each country so they can relate to the need.

The photo of the man is perfect for our needs and to anyone who has not been to the country will be able to see what people from the country look like, what the surroundings look like and get a sense of life there.

If you could email me back as soon as possible and give me permission that would be very helpful.

Many thanks

Yours sincerely

Bruce, The Bible Society in New Zealand Inc.

Subject: Your essay

Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2006

I just happened upon your essay titled "Advice to a young artist". I have yet to read it through. But, I am so awed and inspired by it that I had to stop to do two things - one, email it to my daughter and two, email you.

My daughter just completed her college freshman year and last week left for Mumbai. She will be there for two months volunteering for Akanksha (tutoring slum children). She is staying with my father.

It is only a week since she got there, but it is somewhat rough going because of language issues and cultural differences. On one hand she gets a lot of flack because she speaks no Hindi. On the other hand, she gets the feeling that people (including some members of the family) are somewhat unsympathetic to her desire to engage in this type of volunteer work. I am sure your essay will speak to her on many levels.

Best wishes.

Dear Sir,
I am an editor working with the publishing company, Orient Longman. I am currently editing a series of ICSE History books for the classes 6,7, and 8. The author of the book is no more and as editor I have to source the images for the text-book. The clarity and beauty of your photos on various historical sites in India is such that I find that at least 5 images I have short-listed are from your site.

I would like to use these images. What is the procedure I would have to follow for that? As just an editor with no access to royalty it would be very difficult for me to pay for all the photos. Could you allow me to use them with just a copy-right acknowledgement below each photo? If you do allow it, that would be indeed very kind of you. However, if you have any reservations to your photos being used thus please let me know. I will not use your images even though the book would be definitely poorer for it.

Hoping to hear from you as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Jyoti

Subject: your foto on your website

dear mr. shunya!
i found your wonderful website by "google-ing" in the internet and it really is great! there are so many fantastic fotos from all over the world (have you been to all that places???) and "food for thought" is a very interesting part of it too! amazing! but of course that is not the only reason for my mail ...

i'm writing from germany and this summer me and a friend are planning an open air cinema. we want to place it in a part of our city, where mainly students, artists and workless people live (it's in friedrichshain/berlin, in the former east part of the city) and right now we're planning the movies we want to show and a programm-poster to hang out everywhere with all dates and all movies. i had the idea of using one of your fotos for the poster. of course in berlin it doesn't look like that - but the idea was, to show with the photo, how cinema can be like in other parts of the world, because we want to show movies from all over the world - from japan, thailand, europe, africa and so on ...

Of course we don't have much money for this projekt. booking of movies for "real" cinema (not showing dvd's by beamer) is expensive and we want cheap prices for that neighborhood in which we work (for example workless people should get in for half of the price of normal cinema prices, because right now we have big problem in germany with many many workless people). and in cinema business the big multiplex companies are dominating all.

so the question is: may we use your foto for free? ...[misc. stuff clipped]...

best regards from berlin/germany!!!

Legend has it that the Mughal ruler Jahangir, upon seeing the Kashmir valley for the first time, uttered the words:
Gar firdaus, ruhe zamin ast, hamin asto, hamin asto, hamin asto.  ("If there is a heaven on earth, it's here, it's here, it's here")

Subject: YOUR WEB SITE, PHOTOS and TRAVELS

Date: Sat, 03 Jun 2006

Namaste Namit, namaste Shunya.net,

Just visited your beautiful web page and enjoyed travelling through India, this time through Internet. I was four times in India and it was a great pleasure for me and for my wife to see your photos from many places in India we had no chances to visit during our previous visits.

Your sense for photography is excellent. Bravo!  It is obvious that you involve lots of patience and efforts for every single photo to make it to look best and optimal.  You have a nice combination of well known Indian tourist resorts as well as photos from lesser or even unknown places from touristical point of view. While seeing f.e. your photos from Orchha, Khajuraho, Lucknow, etc....., one can see beautiful monuments [of] various Indian religions, often photographed with just few visitors ... Particularly i have liked color balance for your photos ... with nice realistic stone and greenery colors and shades ...

Best regards from Croatia, Europe from Mike and Simone.

I am K Kumar, a web developer ... in Hyderabad. I am currently developing a website for Social-Impact International, a non-profit organization [that helps] social entrepreneurs to accelerate and increase their social impact and to reach their full potential. They have setup a small office here in Hyderabad ...

As I am in the process of developing their website, I was just looking for some photos/images on the net for header images, when I happened to view your website and the amazing photos you have taken. I must say that I was quite impressed by them and I couldn't find such amazing  photos anywhere on the web. I would like to know if I can download some of these photos, cut them to reduce their size and include them on the website ... as top header images. I would really appreciate if you would kindly allow me to include these photos free of charge and provide me with a free license as I am also not charging anything from Social-Impact for these photos. I am just charging a nominal amount for developing the website, which is only for the development work involved. The design work involving graphics/images/logo/stylesheets/photos are being provided for free.

Please do let me know at the earliest. Thanking you and hoping for a positive response. With best regards.

Subject: Usage of Photography

Dear Shunya,
I have recently started a South Asian Journal at the University of California, San Diego. Every quarter (3 times a school year) we are publishing a journal on issues relating to South Asia ranging from political protests to the art of classical dance in India. We are not selling the journals because we want to promote to spread of information and students' perspectives on such issues. Essentially, we aim to serve as a hub for ideas and opinions on issues among college students as a non profit organization.

This quarter, we are doing an article on Hijras and their roles in society. However,
we need to use the picture for editorial purposes. I wanted to know the procedure and requirements in terms of using your pictures for publication purposes and other costs possibly involved. Attached is a letter with more specifics. Please get back to me as soon as you can. Again, we would very much appreciate your help!

Thank you!

Hi Namit,

This is D - I met you and U at Little Rann of Kutch (Devjibhai's Desert Resort) with my friends -- S [father] and P [daughter].

I hope you had a wonderful trip post our meeting.

I visited your site and was truly amazed by the quality of the photographs. Your travelogues too are quite interesting. I have visited your site only about a 3 or 4 times, but each time I ended up spending hours looking at the pictures and admiring them for their composition, their lighting and the sheer photo ops that you've been able to capture. I must say that your work is very inspiring, especially for an amateur like me- who has just begun experimenting.

As you would have seen from some of my photographs, I am just about a novice in this field - but I thought I will share some of my pictures with you for your comments, suggestions. I have re-sized them since I am e-mailing them - but I plan to put them on my blog.

Good luck to your forthcoming ventures and I look forward to spending more hours admiring the pictures on your website. Please convey my regards to U (Maybe I'll pick up the novel on my next visit to Crosswords)

Cheers!

Subject: permission to use your photographs

Date: Thu, 18 May 2006

Dear Mr. Arora:

I am seeking materials for an educational web site for Swahili learners and was wondering if I might be able to use some of your photographs, which are posted here.  Specifically, I am designing a web site with a series of exercises for beginning students of the Swahili language focused on the theme of ïthe kangaÍ (that is, how the kangas are used, how women communicate with kangas, kanga sayings, etc.).  Once this educational web site is completed, it will be available to any Swahili learner or instructor with access to the internet and relevant technologies.  I, myself, am currently in my third year of Swahili language studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the development of this web site is part of a class assignment.

Since the web site I am designing will be freely available to any student or instructor of Swahili (or any other interested party) who has access to the internet, I am unable to pay for the use of copyrighted photos.  However, I would, of course, include your copyright notice next to any photo of yours that was used as well as any other information you wished me to post.

I am particularly interested in using the photos labeled ñWorking womenî, ñvillage pathî, ñlocal womanî, and one [with] women weaving baskets.  All of these photos would be very useful for the educational web site I am creating because they show how women wear and use kanga.

I look forward to your reply.

Thank you,

Eleanor Carter

Subject: Permission Request for Upright Hominid Steps

Date: Sat, 22 Apr 2006

Dear Shunya,

I work for Insight Press, a small progressive publisher in Chicago USA, and we are publishing The Science of Evolution and the Myth of Creationism, Knowing What's Real and Why It Matters by Ardea Skybreak, to appear in September 2006. I am seeking permission to reproduce your wonderful photograph "Upright Hominid Steps" in our forthcoming book. We would need a high resolution .jpg file @ 300dpi.

... the photograph would be reproduced as part of a 16-page full color insert illustrating key concepts of evolutionary theory ... we think these footsteps are awe-inspiring especially close up as they are in your photograph ... This book proceeds from the point of view that it is of crucial importance that everyone understand the basic facts of evolution as well as the essentials of the scientific method. This is not only a matter of general education: Ardea Skybreak strongly believes that when people are deprived of a scientific approach to reality as a whole, they are robbed of both a full appreciation of the beauty and richness of the natural world and the means to understand the dynamics of change not only in nature but in human society as well.

As the publisher, we want to make this book available to many people--both those who are scientifically-minded as well as those who are not generally exposed to science in the course of their daily lives. To reach such a wide audience, we want to keep the cost of the book low so it is available to those who want to learn about the science of evolution, and are concerned about the future of humanity, but cannot afford expensive books. Since we are a small publisher with limited resources, would you consider making the "Upright Hominid Steps" photograph available at little or no cost as part of helping us reach such a broad audience?

Thank you so much for your consideration of this project.
All the best,
Ray

Subject: kanchenjunga

Date: Mon, 13 Feb 2006

hello, my name is bo van der werf, i am a musician and i live in brussels.

we just recorded a new cd with my band ïocturnÍ and the music i wrote for this new project is very much inspired by a trip i made to the kanchenjunga a few years ago. I read a lot of buddhist writings during the compositional period of this project and it also definitely influenced the way i have constructed the harmonic, rhythmic and melodic processes.

the title of our next double cd is ï21 emanationsÍ and contains a five-part suite named ïkanchenjungaÍ.

while looking for more information and pictures of the kanchenjunga on the net this afternoon, i found your site and i am very impressed by it. Since then i completely immersed myself into it, it is a great site full of beautiful discoveries and humanity. I like very much your essay ïadvice to a young artistÍ.

the reason why i write to you is because i was thinking how great it would be to illustrate the cd with some of your pictures of the kanchenjunga as they are magnificent, so I wanted to ask you if it would be possible to use some of them.

I read about the copyright rules. We are a modern jazz group and it is true that we donÍt have a big market !... 1200 copies will be made ( which include 200 for the press ), it will be distributed by a small French label named YOLK (yolkrecords.com) and the cd will mainly be distributed in Belgium and in France in specialised stores, it will also be possible to purchase a copy via their website or ours ( octurn.com )

so as you see we are not produced by Universal ! ... the money that i could pay for the rights of using the pictures would be only symbolic, would xxx euros be OK ? I feel ashamed but i couldnÍt pay more than that really as it is coming out of our own pocket as we are not backed by a major for this production...

If you agree, the pictures will of course be credited and will only be used for the lay-out of the cd and promotional material related to this cd. I can also put your website on our site in the ïlinksÍ section if you like. What I can also offer is my music !...if you want you can use excerpts of the music of this cd for any of your activities ( if you like it of course ! ). I will send you some music of our next cd by ïyousendit.comÍ ... if you want to have an idea of the music we make

hope to hear from you soon
all the best

Dear Shunya,
I am inquiring whether you would mind if I used some of your beautiful photographs, mainly of Ugarit and Palmyra, to help illustrate a university course I am teaching on the Ancient Near East.

Sincerely

Subject: Permission to Use Your Photographs

Dear Shunya

I should be most grateful if you would allow me to use 6 of your Kampala photographs as shown temporarily pending your approval on my website at [link].

If you object to my using them I shall withdraw this page immediately.  However I hope you will consent as I am sure people will not only appreciate comparing modern Kampala with Kampala of fifty years ago, already on my site but will also avail themselves of the link to your site.

I am a retired schoolmaster who was brought up in East Africa and would emphasise that my site is entirely managed by me as a hobby and has no commercial or financial interests.  My index page is www.mccrow.org.uk

I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards, MM

Subject: Nainital photos are excellent

Date: Sun, 15 Jan 2006

Hi, Thank you so much for posting your excellent India photos--especially of Nainital--on the web. My mom and I are planning a trip there next year and your images are by far the best I've seen online.

Do you know Nainital very well? My mom's grandparents lived there and in Mussoorie and Lucknow in the early 1900s. We have lots of old B&W photos of them. So our trip to Nainital and surrounding area will be not just for fun but for family history as well. We're trying to find out as much about the history of the area as possible. Any historians you know of that we could write to?

Thanks!

Subject: People Photo Permissions

Date: Fri, 13 Jan 2006

Warmest greetings. I discovered your excellent people photos on the web and am writing to ask permission to display some of these on the Joshua Project website. You can see an example of some of the photos we have gathered here.

We are a non-profit, religious organization so I understand if you have hesitations about displaying your photos here. If you give permission, we will list the photo source as "Used with permission, © 2005 Shunya" with a clickable link to your site. For an example of how we link, see the Source under the photo on the following page.

Many thanks for considering this.
Sincerely, Dan

This note is just to tell you how much I enjoy your wonderful pictures on India (and everywhere else for that matter). I have used some of these pictures to make up a few slide shows - with musical accompaniment - for some of my friends and relatives to enjoy (about 6-8 people in all).

My only profit is to give them pleasure. I do not even have my own website. I simply email the stuff to them. I am making a donation of $20.00 via PayPal to express my appreciation.

Best wishes for your health & happiness
