Description

This ceramic bowl is one of the first examples to incorporate calligraphy as the main element of decoration. The Arabic word "ghibta" (happiness) is repeated in the center and creates a balanced composition when combined with the half-circles decorating the rim.

Signature, Marks, and Inscriptions

Inscriptions: Arabic, kufic script, in center; transliteration: "ghibta"; translation: "happiness". See catalogue card for transcription by M. Jenkins, 1982.
